MEET THE CEO
FCS JEREMIAH N. KARANJA, MBS

As the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Certified Secretaries (ICS), FCS Karanja brings extensive expertise in governance. He leads the Institute in promoting sustainability and governance standards within organizations, aiming to uphold its position as a leader in fostering good governance for a sustainable society. This aligns with its mandate to advocate for good governance practices across private, public, and civil society institutions. Under his guidance, the Institute has made significant strides in advancing the governance and corporate secretarial profession in Kenya.


Besides his position at ICS, FCS Karanja also holds a seat on the Registration of Certified Public Secretaries Board, where he leverages his governance expertise within the public sector. As a committed governance professional and active member of ICS, he plays a vital role in driving the profession forward.


FCS Karanja is a qualified lawyer, accredited governance auditor, trainer of trainers, governance advisor, and human resource professional. Over the years, he has provided his expertise and services to various public, private, and civil society entities.

FCS Karanja holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication, Public Administration, and Political Science from the University of Nairobi (UoN), as well as an MBA in Strategic Management and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the same institution. Currently, he is pursuing his PhD in Leadership and Governance at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), further expanding his knowledge and expertise in the field.

As an author, FCS Karanja has published notable works such as "Corporate Governance and Ethics" (2019) and "Public Governance, Administration, and Policy" (2020), alongside numerous professional articles. He has also played a pivotal role in the development of governance codes and guidelines for various organizations, including state corporations, private companies, and churches. Additionally, he serves as an editor for "The Governance Journal," a peer-reviewed professional and academic journal by ICS, as well as "The Governance Practitioner," also published by ICS, a professional magazine for practitioners in the field of governance. He has contributed input as a co-author and led the team in spearheading publications by ICS, including the governance auditor's manual, Meetings, Writing, and Records Management Manual, 360 Degrees Board Development Manual, Governance, Ethics, Risk, and Compliance Manual, The History of the Certified Secretaries Profession, and The State of CS Profession in Kenya, among others.

FCS Karanja's contributions to the profession have been recognized with commendations and fellowships from the Council of ICS, highlighting his distinguished service to the profession and society at large. In December 2023, he was honored with the prestigious "Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (M.B.S.)" award by the Head of State for his outstanding contributions to the nation.

Guided by his career principle rooted in Colossians 3:23, FCS Jeremiah N. Karanja approaches his work with dedication, integrity, and a commitment to excellence, knowing that his ultimate service is to the Lord.
